About This Video

In this video, I installed Fedora Linux for the very first time to see if it really deserves the “best beginner distro” reputation. I did a full fresh install of Fedora Linux 43 Workstation Edition—booting the live ISO, wiping the disk, and going through the first-time setup (language, time zone, disabling location services and automatic problem reporting, and enabling third-party repositories because, honestly, that’s super useful). After the reboot, I took the GNOME tour, checked out the overview with the Super (Windows) key, and started exploring what’s actually pre-installed. Then I jumped straight into the stuff I care about most: tweaking and customization. I fixed the broken-looking display by switching the resolution to 1920x1080 at 60Hz, tested the built-in mouse settings preview (which is pretty damn good), and tried changing the cursor and desktop behavior. To get a custom cursor working, I had to use the terminal with DNF and install GNOME Tweaks—this part was a bit of a headache. I also figured out desktop icons by enabling a GNOME extension and manually copying .desktop app files into the Desktop folder, plus “Allow Launching.” Finally, I installed the Helium browser via AppImage using a helper app, and shared my honest takeaway: Fedora looks nice and window snapping is solid, but customizing it takes extra steps compared to Windows.
