A MacBook costs how much… 1,200, 1,600, 2,500 for the good one. In this video I installed Elementary OS 8 from scratch to see if this free Linux distro can give you that premium macOS-style experience without spending a single dollar. I start in the live ISO, do a clean “erase disk and install,” skip encryption, and even include the extra proprietary drivers option. Right away, the installer and first boot feel surprisingly polished, with heavy blur effects and a dock that instantly gives “Mac vibes.” After setup, I run it through a bunch of real-world customization tests: fixing the resolution to 1920×1080, checking the quick toggles (dark mode, percentage, etc.), and dialing in the look with wallpapers, dock size, translucency, text scaling, and appearance scheduling. Then I hit one of the biggest Linux pain points for beginners: cursor theming. I tried the terminal route, ran into “snap command not found,” enabled snapd, and eventually used Pantheon Tweaks to manage themes—still way harder than doing the same thing on Windows. Finally, I install the apps I actually need from AppCenter (Firefox, VLC, VS Code, and a music player) and test window snapping. Overall, I genuinely like Elementary OS as a Mac-style Linux option, especially if you want a clean setup and App Store-like experience.
