About This Video

In this video I’m checking out Shosetsu—an open-source, lightweight Android web novel reader. If you just want a clean app to read web novels without a bunch of extra clutter, the UI here is super simple: the first page shows the novels you’ve added, “Updates” shows when a new chapter drops, “Browse” is where you manage sources, and then you’ve got Settings. I also go through the actual reading experience. From the settings you can switch themes, and inside a chapter you can tweak font size and spacing to make it more comfortable. Adding a novel is straightforward: first add a source from the Source section, then search inside that source for the novel you want. For performance, chapter load time was super quick for me—I didn’t face issues there. One feature I genuinely liked is offline reading: you can download chapters, and while there’s no precise batch control, you can download the entire novel. The main issue I hit was a 404 error on one source—so not really the app’s fault, more like the source going down (and yeah, these sites lose ad money when you read through reader apps). Overall, it’s a solid, no-nonsense novel reader if your sources are working.
