About This Video

When you add two masks in a Fusion comp (Mask 2 feeding into Mask 1), Resolve quietly unlocks a super important control on Mask 1 called Paint Mode. I use this to decide how those two masks should interact—whether they blend together, cut each other out, or only show the overlap. In this video I quickly go through every Paint Mode option so you don’t have to guess what each one does. I cover Merge vs Add (they look similar until you add feather—then you can clearly see Blend vs No-Blend), and I show the classic operations like Subtract, Minimum, and Maximum. Then I break down the ones people usually ignore: Average (overlap stays 100% while the rest drops to 50%), Multiply (behaves like Minimum), Replace (similar to Merge/Add but handles edges differently—again, feather makes it obvious), and Invert (the intersected area disappears). Finally, I explain Copy and Ignore so you can force Fusion to show only Mask 1 or only Mask 2. If you’re doing precise cutouts, motion graphics mattes, or cleanup work, these modes save a ton of time.
