About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down the Render Cache Format setting in DaVinci Resolve—where to find it, what the options actually mean, and what I personally use. You’ll find it in Project Settings → Master Settings → Optimized Media and Render Cache, and Resolve gives you three main choices: DNxHR, Uncompressed, and GoPro CineForm. I go over the bit-depth options too, because that’s where a lot of people mess up their cache quality without realizing it. I also share a key warning from my own testing: if you’re going DNxHR for 8‑bit, DNxHR HQ exists, but I don’t recommend it—especially if you’re doing heavy noise reduction, because you can get banding. I stick with DNxHR HQX instead. And if you’re not using cache for final output, you can go lower (DNxHR SQ/LQ) to save space—your final export will still use the original media, so quality stays fine. Finally, I compare cache time and storage on my system. Quality differences between these formats are negligible, so the real decision is speed vs size. In my test, GoPro CineForm rendered about a minute faster than DNxHR and Uncompressed, and it also used less space than DNxHR—while Uncompressed was the space hog. Your GPU changes the timing, so I recommend you run a quick test on your own setup.
