About This Video

In this video I show you how I slow down footage using Fusion inside DaVinci Resolve, and why I even bother doing it this way. For me, Fusion slow motion gives really good quality—same or sometimes better than what you can get with Speed Warp—plus it feels more smooth, and you get a lot more control over the parameters. But yeah, it’s not always a good ride: it’s more complex, and it’s processor dense, so expect heavier playback. I start by creating a new Fusion Composition (this part matters) and then I open it in the Fusion page and drag my clip from the Media Pool. I trim the exact section I want using the Trim controls, because using a Fusion Composition is what lets me elongate the clip properly back on the Edit page after slowing it down. Then I add two nodes: an Optical Flow node and a Time Speed node. I set Time Speed interpolation to Flow, adjust the Speed value to get the slow motion, and if edges get distorted I use Clamp Adjust (or just zoom in from Edit if Clamp makes it worse). Finally, I switch Optical Flow to Advanced (GPU), tune Warp/Iteration/Smoothness carefully, and use Vectors view to judge changes—then I render cache or render in place if playback struggles.
