About This Video

In this video I’m showing you how I build a custom “horizontal to vertical” converter as a reusable Fusion effect inside DaVinci Resolve. The goal is simple: I want one generalized setup that works for basically any horizontal clip, so I’m not rebuilding the same vertical workflow every time. I start by creating a transparent Background node as a resolution controller, turn on Auto Resolution, and set it to a vertical resolution. Then I use a Merge (my “resolution merge”) so that the background node drives the comp resolution, while your MediaIn sits on top—clean and predictable. After that, I cover two main looks: a full cover style (just scale up with a Transform after MediaIn), and a blurred background style where I blur the clip, scale it to fill the vertical frame, and then layer the clean clip on top. Then I go into overlays: I duplicate the source using a Brightness/Contrast node with Alpha enabled and Gain set to 0, cut out parts using an inverted Polygon mask (and I disable shape animation to avoid accidental keyframing), and position each overlay with a Transform. Finally, I show how to control multiple overlays using a controller/chain Transform setup with expressions, and how to save everything as a Group (not a Macro) so you can still edit nodes later and use it from the Edit page Effects panel.
