About This Video

In this video I’m sharing a straight comparison between Render Cache and Render in Place in DaVinci Resolve. This is not a “which one is best” type of video, because both have their own benefits depending on the project. I break it down as caching methods that improve two main things: playback performance (smooth timeline after heavy color/Fusion) and overall render time (finishing the project faster). I go through the real-world differences in how they behave. Render Cache is a background process that can run in real time while I’m still working, but it can slow the system down. Render in Place is a foreground process—when it’s running, I can’t edit—but it creates a reusable file I can use again in the same project or even other projects. I also explain the workflow tradeoffs: Render in Place bakes the Fusion and grade into a new clip (so I need to “Decompose to Original” to tweak), while Render Cache keeps me on the same original clip so adjustments are easy. I also cover practical stuff like timeline resolution limitations, enabling “Use Render Cache Images,” format and file size differences (Render Cache can get huge), and why Render Cache is more automatic (Smart mode) while Render in Place is manual per clip. My personal workflow: I prefer Render in Place after I’m done with effects/grade, and Render Cache when I still need to keep tweaking but want smoother playback.
