About This Video

In this video I’m sharing 6 practical tips I use to improve slow motion quality in DaVinci Resolve—especially when you start seeing warping, frame distortion, or choppy playback. First, I tweak the Project Settings > Frame Interpolation > Motion Range (Small/Medium/Large). If the clip has a lot of movement, I go Larger, but keep in mind it eats more resources—so if your PC can’t handle it, Small is lighter. Then I test different Motion Estimation methods in the Edit page (Inspector > Retime and Scaling). You’ve got options like Standard and Enhanced, all the way up to Speed Warp, and yes, the processing requirement increases as you go up. But here’s the key: “best” isn’t always best. I’ve seen Speed Warp literally remove parts of the footage, so sometimes Enhanced Better gives a cleaner result. I also show how cutting only the distorted section and changing estimation just for that part can reduce artifacts. I also downscale clips (like 4K to 1080p) to reduce distortion, and I avoid color grading while doing slow motion—first I slow it down, then Render in Place (or render it out), and only then I grade. Finally, if playback is choppy, I jump into Fusion and use Optical Flow with Advanced Smoothness—just remember it’s resource intensive, so use Render Cache/Render in Place.
