About This Video

In this video I’m testing Carmageddon: Roll Shift on the Steam Deck OLED, and honestly it’s a weirdly nostalgic moment for me—because I genuinely haven’t played Carmageddon since the late 90s. The series was always about over-the-top destruction and chaotic driving, and jumping back in on a modern handheld feels a little surreal. This new entry also throws in a roguelike progression system, so each run lets you upgrade your car, build toward stronger setups over time, and even fight bosses. It’s still that same “cause as much chaos as possible” vibe, and surprisingly, it still works. Performance-wise, it’s decent but not consistent. I can hit 60 FPS on Low during lighter moments, but once the screen fills up with enemies, effects, and collisions, it can drop to around 30 FPS or lower. I tested the in-game upscalers (TAA, XCSS, FSR), and I don’t like any of them here—XCSS frame gen feels super floaty with noticeable input lag, and FSR 3 adds shimmering that looks rough in a fast game. My best results were turning off all upscalers, using Medium preset, and dropping resolution scale to about 80% for smoother frame pacing around 40–50 FPS. If you want it to feel even better, Lossless Scaling 2x frame generation can push it closer to a consistent 60 FPS (with some input delay), and battery life landed around 2.5 hours on the OLED.
