About This Video

In this video I break down Valve’s GDC developer talk about Steam hardware and SteamOS, and there were two big reveals that actually matter for us as players: Steam Machine Verified and Steam Frame Verified. On the Steam Machine side, Valve is basically building the whole verification system on top of the Steam Deck testing pipeline. If a game is Deck Verified, it automatically becomes Machine Verified, and a lot of “Deck Playable” issues (like UI scaling) just disappear on a TV. The only big exception is input problems, and the other interesting twist is that performance-unsupported Deck games can get retested for stronger Steam Machine hardware. The headline everyone latched onto is the target for Steam Machine Verified: 1080p at 30 FPS. Personally, I think that’s less about “this is all it can do” and more about Valve setting a minimum guarantee that instantly unlocks a massive catalog. Still, it’s a weird signal in a world where most TVs are 60Hz or 120Hz and this console generation pushed 60fps hard. Then I cover Steam Frame, which has streaming mode (no verification needed if your PC runs it well) and standalone mode, where Valve is targeting 90fps for VR and 720p/30 for 2D. Based on my own ARM handheld testing, that 720p/30 baseline lines up with reality—and it’s why I don’t think an ARM Steam Deck makes sense anytime soon.
