About This Video

In this video I’m in the Shelvington garage layout giving six pretty old, tired Mainline 1‑plank wagons a new lease on life. They’d been sitting in a box for ages because they just weren’t worth the hassle—old plastic wheels, big “pizza-cutter” style flanges, and those chunky old D-link couplers meant they’d derail on the points and generally ran like a mission. I wanted them back on the layout, so I kept it simple: swap the couplers for a smaller, slimmer type, and replace the wheelsets with Bachmann split spoke wheels. A recent auction haul here in Wellington made this possible—I picked up boxes of brand-new wheels and bags of couplings, so it was the perfect time to start upgrading neglected rolling stock. I show a close-up comparison of the old vs new coupler, check the back-to-back with my gauge, and then you can really see the “night and day” difference once the new wheels are in. With basically a five-minute job per wagon, they roll freely, couple more positively, and they’ll do laps of the layout with no problems. The big takeaway: if you’ve got wagons parked in boxes because they’re unreliable, a quick wheel and coupler upgrade can get them earning their keep again.
