About This Video

Today at Shelvington I’m showing you a tiny tool that makes a massive difference to how your wagons roll on the layout: the Truck Tuner (and I’ve since found DCC Concepts do something very similar). The idea is simple—pop the wheelsets out, use the tool in the axle “space” where the points sit, give it a few turns, and it mills/cleans a fresh, smooth seat in the plastic. Then you reinstall the wheels and repeat for the other side. It’s quick, and you don’t need to overthink it—just a few turns each side. I tested it back-to-back on my own wagons and the before/after is honestly incredible in the small space I’ve got here. After tuning, they roll smoother, straighter, and the rolling resistance drops right down—my older wagons went from “they run okay” to “they run perfectly.” I’ve already done a few wagons and I’ll be working through the rest of the rake (including those Conflat wagons I mentioned previously). Now, cost-wise it’s not cheap—about NZ$50 delivered—so it feels like a big outlay. But when you look at the benefit you get on every single wagon, I genuinely see it as a proper investment for smoother operation.
