About This Video

In this episode at Shelvington Model Railway, I’m upgrading my DRS nuclear flask train with two key additions I’ve been hunting for: a rare DRS brake coach and another Class 68. After months of searching online and getting nowhere with reference numbers, I finally spotted the brake coach for sale at a shop up in Auckland here in New Zealand—so of course it had to come home to the garage layout for an unboxing and a proper look. I go through first impressions on the brake coach (it’s a really nice-looking bit of kit with a decent weight) and point out the crisp markings and transfer detail that match the real train well. I also chat about extra details I’d like to add later—like the window grilles/CCTV-style bits—because I believe there’s a 3D printed kit available to take it up a notch. Then I bring in the new Class 68 “Intrepid” to join “Poppy” for double-heading duties, compare the subtle differences (roof detail, colours, names/numbers), and get a DCC chip installed so I can run it. On the layout, I test the formation and explain a real-world running issue you’ll hit with double-heading: speed matching. With one loco at the rear it was pushing the couplers and causing uncoupling, so for now I run both locos at the front until I can properly set up speed profiling. I’m still on the hunt for a second DRS brake coach to finish the rake off properly.
