Work With Your Dog On Impulse Control Using A Drone

Impulse and prey drive - two things that work together to lead to all sorts of accidents like fights between animals, the neighbor's cat getting attacked, bolting out of the door, not coming when called and even your dog getting hurt by not realizing the danger of an impulsive decision (running across traffic to get that squirrel or losing and eye from a drone blade to the face). When we brought this drone home, it was quickly apparent that Blue honed in on it and not only wanted to take it out of the sky, but also went over her threshold while her Dad was flying it to where she was so fixated on it, she couldn't turn away from the stimulus in response to her name when he called her. What a great opportunity to work on impulse control! ***Side note - this drone footage was captured by my 14 year old son who was flying this for the first time with Blue Ivy - be kind with your production value comments!*** Back to the meat. The goal, as is with any impulse control exercise, is to engage her thinking state of mind and bring her out of that impulsive state of mind. When first practicing this, there has to be more benefit for your dog to follow your guidance rather than act on that impulse. It takes a lot of repetition under low levels of distraction, gradually building up closer and closer to their threshold to help push that threshold further and further out. How prey drive plays a role in all of this: Prey sequence behaviors are ingrained in our dog's DNA. It's "written" deep in their genetic code. Due to the evolution of their genetics and the way that we have bred domesticated dogs, some dogs display zero prey behaviors, (those include stalk, chase, grab, kill, and consume other animals), others may still show one or two of those behaviors, while in some cases, a dog may still exhibit the entire sequence. There are so many exercises that you can work with your dog on impulse control - watch my "place" video (link below) to practice a cue that will help with in-home impulses like over-excitement when guests come to the house. Doing boundary training through thresholds (going out of the front or back door or up and down the stairs) can help reduce that impulsive bolting behavior. Whether you use a drone, a distraction such as another dog on leash while walking, or the yummy food that drops on the floor, impulse control exercises greatly helps reduce the likelihood of accidents with your dog. Remember to keep them below their threshold, advance gradually, use lots of positive reinforcement when they check in with you, and give them rest after working their brain. Looking for a drone?
