About This Video

In this video I walk you through one of the biggest mistakes people make with fearful dogs: trying to hand them a treat. If you’re in a vet hospital, grooming/boarding, rescue, or you’re just trying to help a friend with a nervous dog, the goal is the same—reduce pressure. Instead of offering food from your hand, I start by tossing treats away from me so the dog can approach and retreat on their own terms. Once the dog is engaged, I’ll alternate: drop a couple treats near me, then toss one away again. That “in-and-out” pattern helps the dog share space with me in short spurts without feeling trapped. If the dog is showing relaxed body language and I decide to offer from my hand, I keep it low-pressure: a flat hand with one hand, and I immediately toss a treat away with the other hand. I also cover the handling basics that matter just as much as the food—don’t go to the dog, let the owner bring the dog to you, avoid eye contact, don’t bend over, and keep your voice to yourself (your “it’s okay” can be aversive when they’re scared). And I end the interaction cleanly: owner calls the dog away and rewards the exit, or I drop a handful of treats and walk away. Taking treats doesn’t automatically mean the dog is comfortable—so don’t push it.
