In this video, I answer real dog questions from fifth and sixth graders—and honestly, they asked some of the best, most responsible questions I hear. We cover everything from why dogs’ noses are wet (mucosal glands + up to about 600 million scent receptors) to how to spot allergies (itching, redness, paw chewing, sneezing) and how to tell when a dog might be sick by noticing changes from their normal baseline. I also talk through what to do if you’re bitten (wash with an antiseptic like chlorhexidine when you can, and if you can’t, let it bleed first) and how to stay safe if an off-leash dog charges you (go “tree”/“baby tree,” stay calm, don’t run, and call for help quietly). We also get into everyday training and behavior: how I prevent jumping by “beating them to the punch” and rewarding four paws on the floor, why some dogs whine at the door for attention instead of potty, and why grass-eating is often normal (but can also be stress coping or an upset stomach). I explain the 3-3-3 rule for new dogs, how dogs “talk” mostly with body language, and how breed tendencies relate to the jobs we’ve bred dogs to do. My big takeaway: meet needs first (mental + physical), use reinforcement your dog loves, and build a strong team with a trainer/behavior pro and your veterinarian.
