Brushing your dog’s teeth is one of those things everyone tells you to do… and then you try it with a wiggly puppy (or a dog who hates mouth handling) and it feels impossible. In this video, I walk you through exactly how I condition a dog to accept teeth brushing as a stress-free, cooperative behavior—by breaking it down into tiny, achievable steps and then bridging those steps together. I’m showing nine real training sessions with my puppy, Bavachi, all the way up to a full 30 seconds of calm brushing. We start with first impressions: play first to get the wiggles out, then warm up with known skills like a chin rest. From there I build a start button (so my dog can say “yes, I’m ready” or opt out), add gentle muzzle handling, lift the lip, introduce a jaw hold, and only then bring in the toothbrush and toothpaste. I also cover how I choose products (I like a VOHC seal for toothpaste), why the mechanical motion of brushing matters most for plaque, and how I troubleshoot common issues like dogs being too hungry, too focused on treats, or just not in the mood.
