In this unedited session, I’m showing you what “8–10 minutes of training” actually looks like in a two-dog household. I’ve got Blue Ivy and puppy Astra, and I’m using one dog as the primary learner while the other becomes the distraction. This is only the second time they’ve worked off-leash together, so you’ll see the real stuff: Astra breaking position, me calmly resetting her, and me rotating between skills so the session stays fun and productive instead of turning into “fun police.” My main focus here is Astra’s heel work under distraction, but I weave in voluntary eye contact (“watch me”), sits, downs, and the beginnings of stay. I also explain how I use two release cues—“okay” (come out of position but stay engaged) versus “free” (go make your own choices). You’ll see me reward first-time correct responses, avoid repeating cues unless she’s truly learning something new, and use a clear “hot/cold” tone: upbeat encouragement when she’s right, and a lower discouragement tone when she’s drifting off. Big takeaway: if you want progress with two dogs, get solid one-on-one reps first. Dogs get distracted fast, competition shows up, and it’s unfair to expect great work together if they don’t understand the skills separately. And when your dog hits their limit—like Astra does near the end—end on an easy win, reward it, say “free,” and call it a day.
