In this video I’m showing off a custom, hand-made wood scriber handle I’ve been building one at a time, fully shaped, sanded, and finished by hand. The whole point of this design is comfort and control: I cut in finger grooves for your index finger, thumb, and second finger so the handle sits the same way every time and doesn’t “rock” like round handles. I’m doing this because a lot of the common options (like heavy solid aluminum handles) just aren’t comfortable for long sessions, and I wanted something that feels good in the hand and helps you get cleaner, more consistent scribing. I walk through the finished handle going out to Jason (made from bloodwood—still my favorite), then I lay out the different exotic hardwood blanks I’ve got on hand: bocote, Indian ebony (big and heavy), Brazilian ebony, Bolivian rosewood, gaboon ebony, East Indian rosewood, black palm, marblewood, camatillo, and a red coolaba burl I’m saving for my own. I also explain the two styles I’m making: the slide-in style and the collet style (the collet costs more because I’m buying decent collets). I don’t coat them because I want the natural feel—your hand oils will give the wood a nice sheen over time—and if you want one, I have you send a photo of how you hold a pen so I can size it to your grip.
