About This Video

In this quick shop tip, I’m showing you one of my favorite ways to keep panels flat during glue-ups without reaching for “8 billion freaking clamps.” If you’re doing cutting boards, flat panels, or any kind of edge-glued panel work, keeping things from bowing while the glue sets can be a constant fight. My go-to solution is heavy-duty Super Strut—basically two straight, rigid rails that won’t bend—and a simple bolt-and-nut setup to apply even pressure. I picked up two long pieces (around 11–12 feet) and cut them down into 3-foot sections since I don’t usually build anything bigger than that. I also grabbed end caps because once you cut the strut (I used an angle grinder), it gets sharp. After a glue-up, even if the panel starts with a little bow, I clamp it between the struts, let it sit for about an hour and a half to two hours, and it comes out nice and flat. No screws in the panel—just glue and dowels (and honestly, the dowels weren’t even required here), but for a kid’s toy box I wanted that extra long-term stability.
