The Meta Quest Pro and The Pico 4 launched last week becoming to of the most discussed VR headsets on the market. The Quest Pro is the premium follow-up to the popular Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 but aimed at a business-focused customer and the Pico 4 is a new standalone competitor to the Quest 2 from ByteDance owners of Tik Tok. I knew what to expect from the devices and had been saving money ready to purchase. But I didn't, Today I'm going to tell you why.

About This Video

In this video I break down why I was fully ready to buy a new headset after Meta Connect—but I didn’t order the Quest Pro, and I didn’t order the Pico 4 either. Going into Connect, none of the Quest Pro specs surprised me because the rumors were basically spot-on, and that was part of the issue: there was no “magic” software moment that justified a $1500/£1500 leap. I actually like upgrades like better comfort, smaller form factor, and the new controllers, but the big focus on passthrough AR and face tracking just doesn’t do it for me. VR is my escape—I don’t want to play in my studio dodging camera boxes and sim racing gear. The dealbreakers got more practical: 1–2 hours of Quest Pro battery life is a massive step back from my 3–5 hour Quest 2 sessions with a battery pack, and the controllers drain way faster too. On top of that, the headset’s default light gap (as seen in Zuckerberg’s photo) screams “work device,” and if you want proper immersion you’re buying a light blocker add-on. I also compare expectations against true high-end visuals like the Varjo Aero—my next upgrade needs to feel like a real next-gen jump in resolution/FOV/HDR-like punch, not next-gen pricing with “almost” next-gen results. Pico 4 looks solid for the price, but for me it feels more like a Quest 2 alternative than the next step, so I’m holding out for whatever comes next—Quest 3, Index 2/Deckard, Apple VR, or a surprise release.
