VR has had a Rollercoaster start to the year. Most days you will see either news that something great is happening or another project has been a massive failure. Today I want to get under the skin of what direction we are going in by discussing the most recent things that have happened. Whats your thoughts, is the VR dream in trouble?

About This Video

VR has had a proper rollercoaster start to the year, and in this video I try to get under the skin of what direction we’re actually heading in. I break down Meta slashing the Quest Pro price and why I think competition from the Vive XR Elite forced the issue. The XR Elite comes in a good few hundred quid cheaper with a depth sensor and slightly higher resolution, but for me the Quest Pro still edges it overall because you’re getting eye tracking and face tracking too. That said, I can’t ignore the possibility Meta simply made loads of Quest Pros and they’re not shifting as fast as planned—at least here in the UK you can still grab one straight off the shelf in places like Currys and Argos. Then I get into the more worrying headlines: Apple’s headset being delayed again (apparently due to drop-test failures), and Meta shutting down Echo VR despite its massive user base—something even John Carmack called out, suggesting options like leaving it running unsupported or open-sourcing it. To balance that out, there’s genuinely exciting momentum too: Samsung stepping back into VR with Qualcomm and Google, Meta confirming Quest 3 with full-colour passthrough (but no eye/face tracking), and early PSVR2 + Gran Turismo 7 impressions sounding extremely promising—though I’m waiting for the core VR community (and my own preorder) to judge it properly.
