Today I'm discussing the Pimax Portal; a very impressive VR headset that's also a handheld gaming console and does loads more. This was a massive surprise and touted some really impressive specs. But will it live up to all of Pimax's promises? Let's get into the detail and find out. 0:00 Intro 0:00 Pimax Portal 1:52 Its a Handheld Gaming Console 2:57 Its also a High Spec VR Headset 5:28 Will it be any good? 7:46 Its also a Motion Gaming System 8:02 Its also an Entertainment Hub 8:32 Its actually a great price

About This Video

In this video I break down the Pimax Portal, and I genuinely didn’t see it coming. Just days after talking about the Pimax Crystal and hoping Pimax would actually polish one product before jumping to the next, they hit the stage again with a super weird “one device that’s everything” launch. The Portal is a handheld gaming console (Steam Deck/Switch vibes) that also becomes a VR headset, and then apparently an entertainment hub too. It’s modular, with snap-off controllers that can become VR controllers, single controllers for multiplayer, and even motion controllers. From the VR side, the specs are the reason I’m even entertaining it: inside-out tracking with four cameras, up to 144Hz, and—massive point here—HDMI connectivity for PCVR which should mean less compression than the usual streaming approach. There’s also an optional WiGig module that promises high-quality, low-latency wireless PCVR (with the usual line-of-sight and distance caveats). Lenses are a whole menu: around 27 PPD at 100° FOV for general VR, a 40 PPD “movie mode” at 60° FOV, and a wider 140° option at lower clarity, plus an optional “social” headset with facial tracking. My main worry is the ecosystem and software. The launch games didn’t impress me (Space Slurpees really isn’t a system seller), and bespoke content is the Achilles heel here. But then the price hit: starting at 299, and even the QLED + VR bundle being surprisingly affordable. If Pimax can actually deliver and get content support, this could be a genuinely disruptive value play.
