About This Video

In this video I put Steam Link head-to-head with Virtual Desktop to see which one actually delivers the best wireless PCVR experience on Quest 3. Valve stepping into this space got me genuinely excited, because when they do something new it’s usually smooth and well thought out—and I was hoping Steam Link might finally reduce that “wireless compression” look that can remind you you’re streaming. I tested a bunch of my go-to PCVR games (Blade & Sorcery, Automobilista 2, Hubris, and Assetto Corsa Competizione) on both apps, focusing on clarity, compression, and how usable the image is in real gameplay. My setup is solid (Wi‑Fi 6, PC hardwired), and for me Virtual Desktop still wins on visual quality and control. Steam Link’s always-on foveated rendering is the big sticking point: it creates a clearer center with noticeably softer edges, which really clashes with Quest 3 pancake lenses and their edge-to-edge clarity—especially in sim racing where I’m reading HUD/leaderboards without wanting to move my head. Steam Link can be simple and “good enough” in some games like Hubris, and it’s free so it’s absolutely worth trying, but on my rig (4090 + good network) Virtual Desktop’s settings, sharpness, and AV1 encoding keep it as my default.
