In this video I lay out why I genuinely think 2023 could be the greatest year for VR ever. The last couple of years have been rough as a VR enthusiast: hype went through the roof, but the actual experiences didn’t keep pace. After we flew too close to the sun with stuff like Half-Life: Alyx, the industry swung hard toward mobile-only development thanks to the Quest 2 boom, and it left a pretty big AAA-shaped hole in my heart. What makes me hopeful is the hardware wave that’s about to hit. PSVR2 is the big one—if enough people buy in, it pushes developers back toward higher-end experiences, and those games are likely to get ported to PC too, meaning headsets like the Index and Reverb G2 get their moment again. On top of that, Apple’s long-rumored mixed reality headset could shake up the entire market (even if I’m not sure what it means for gaming), Meta is likely heading toward a Quest 3 with the comfort benefits of pancake lenses, Pimax has big promises like Crystal/Portal/12K, and Valve Deckard leaks keep piling up. But the real point is this: it’s not the headsets that matter—it’s what they do to the games. With titles like Horizon Call of the Mountain, Breachers, Ghostbusters, and hopefully GTA: San Andreas VR finally landing, I’m expecting an onslaught of quality experiences that actually bring people back.
