About This Video

In this video I break down the 10 biggest failures I made when I started filming, and the steep learning curve that came with it—so you can learn from my mistakes and save yourself time and money. I start with the basics: picking the right camera and actually learning it properly, then move into lenses and the crop-sensor trap (like buying a 30mm and not realizing it behaves more like ~45mm). I also cover shutter speed (the 180-degree rule), ISO and noise, and why you need to test your gear in real conditions—bright sun, low light, mixed lighting, the lot. Then I get into the stuff that can absolutely ruin a shoot if you ignore it: audio (monitor it, and watch for shirt rustle), lighting (don’t go cheap—get something that flatters), ND filters (don’t just crank your f-stop to f/16 and hope), and stabilization (IBIS and/or a gimbal can save your footage). I also talk about monitoring on a bigger screen so you can actually spot issues like dust, focus misses, and other problems you’ll never see on a tiny camera display. Finally, I touch on color and why higher quality settings like 4:2:2 10-bit can make your life easier in the edit—and I finish with the bonus lesson: keep learning and improve 1% every shoot.
