This little Zoom F3 field recorder genuinely changed everything for us on professional shoots. We ended up buying it because we were getting this annoying static-charge type noise when running an overhead mic straight into our Sony FX6. An audio specialist basically said, “it’s probably the preamps,” and the fix was to add a proper recorder/preamp in the chain. So now I feed audio into the F3, record to microSD, and send an output to camera as well—massive peace of mind. The big “oh my god” feature for me is 32-bit float. In normal human terms: it’s really hard to mess up your audio. If a client suddenly goes from quiet to super animated and peaks the levels, you can pull it back in post instead of binning the take. I also go through the practical stuff: it’s tiny, has two XLR inputs, and you can add Bluetooth (with the BTA-1) to control settings via an app. It’s not perfect though. Mounting is limited out of the box (one thread), so I recommend a SmallRig plate for more options. Battery life on two AA’s is nowhere near the “8 hours” claim in my use—think more like 4–5 hours—and powering via USB-C can introduce nasty noise if you’re also outputting to camera. Even with a few accessories, for the money it’s a no-brainer upgrade for safer audio.
