About This Video

You know that quote, “expect the best, but prepare for the worst”? That’s exactly why I keep a DIY dog first aid kit on hand (or on paw). In this video, I walk you through what I keep in mine and why—because you never know when you’ll be dealing with a cut, scrape, wound, burn, or some random dog-mom emergency that needs attention fast. I’ve had this kit for years and I’m always adding to it as I learn what’s actually useful in real life. I start with wound care basics: cleaning (even when you don’t have access to water), cotton balls, Q-tips, gauze pads, and a flexible bandage with scissors and medical tape. I also keep a pet-safe liquid bandage for smaller spots that don’t need a full wrap. Then I cover medication items like oral syringes, Benadryl (but only with your vet’s guidance and dosage), and a pill cutter since my dogs often need half tablets. I also share a few “dog mom life” additions—like extra sample containers from my vet so I don’t forget stool/urine testing. And two absolute musts for me: styptic powder for nail trimming accidents, and a tick twister (I used it for the first time this year and it was a lifesaver). I keep hydrogen peroxide nearby for emergencies, but I would never induce vomiting without a vet or poison helpline telling me to. And yes, I keep the cone of shame, because ear infections happen.
