The new Roland TD-316 V-Drums might be the kit that brings me back to e-drums. This review covers the new feel and response that finally let me play instead of tweak. We'll focus on the new hi-hat, pads, and the surprisingly good kick drum. About This Video

I think this is the e-drum redemption arc I’ve been waiting for, and in this video I’m sharing my first impressions of the Roland TD-316 after a short hands-on session at Luther Music in Singapore. I start with a quick playing demo (excuse my rubbish playing), then I get into what actually matters to me with e-drums: feel, response, and how quickly I can get into “play mode” without fighting thresholds, sensitivity, and a bunch of tweaking. For once, I sat down and just played—no problem solving first, which is honestly a big deal if you’ve been around older-gen e-kits. I break down what impressed me most: the new hi-hat pad is genuinely responsive (foot splashes, chicks, drags, and side-sweep stuff all worked), the snare/toms feel better with a more realistic rim, and the cymbals move more like real cymbals while still tracking bell/edge accurately. The surprise star for me was the kick pad—small, but the feel and accuracy are way better than previous generations, and fast doubles didn’t feel draining. I also tack on extra notes from a Michael Shack Roland V-Drums event—how the 3/5/7 series handle digital pads, why the digital hi-hat is so processor-heavy, and what Roland’s Wi‑Fi/app-based sound expansions could mean if they keep updating the library. If I was buying for quiet practice and value, the TD-316 is the one I’d seriously consider.
