I took our bland, builder-grade bathroom (the kind that made me lose the will to live every time I walked into it) and gave it a full personality upgrade—without doing any demo. The two things I knew from the start: I wanted to go darker, and I wanted wallpaper for an instant personality injection. Wallpaper choices are genuinely overwhelming (like, 1 zillion options), and I tried to avoid the “obvious” William Morris route… but I kept saving the same pattern over and over, so I trusted my gut and ordered it in peel-and-stick. From there, I layered in character with beadboard (major traditional vibe), a darker paint color (I leaned into the low light—hello, darkness), and small millwork details that made a huge difference. My favorite little upgrade might actually be the thin molding I added to the boring shaker cabinet fronts—it’s subtle but it changes everything. I also swapped polished nickel for brass, spray-painted the existing light fixture gold to save money, framed the giant sheet mirror instead of ripping it out, and finished with extra-long “real curtains” in the shower for our 9-foot ceilings. The final touch: a swan faucet that apparently looks like a duck to some people (it’s a swan).
