About This Video

Are you tired of sterile, bland, boring-looking kitchens? In this video, I break down why kitchen design is shifting from sharp and clinical to warm and cozy—and what the “soft kitchen” trend actually is. To me, a soft kitchen is calm and easy to live in, like an extension of the rest of your home. I walk through the biggest changes I’m seeing: less harsh contrast (goodbye blinding bright white + black hardware), more tonal, earthy palettes (greens, blues, mushroomy neutrals), and a general goal of reducing visual tension so the space feels more soothing. From there, I get practical. I talk about adding wood to warm up all the hard, manufactured surfaces—whether that’s open shelving, stools, a table, or just a few cutting boards on the counter. I also share how designers are adding character with vintage or imperfect pieces so kitchens feel layered, not like one perfectly matched system. We get into designing for lingering (nooks, banquettes, comfortable seating), layering lighting so your kitchen isn’t stuck in “work mode,” and using a little decor and a few textiles to soften both the look and the acoustics. And yes—we’re talking about the controversial idea of sofas in kitchens. Personally, I’m for it.
