In this Ultimate Brooder Series episode, I’m finally dressing out our brooders the way I want them for grow-outs—three different pens for different age birds. We start by getting everything cleaned up and sterile (we already disinfected), then I lay down the pine shavings, set up temporary feeders and waterers, and get ready for roost bars in the next video. It’s been pouring rain, everything’s wet, and I’m just trying to get these babies comfortable and give them room—real ranch life, storms and all. The big takeaway in this one is: chicks will absolutely kick shavings everywhere. We watched them scratch it right out onto the floor, so we made a simple, game-changing upgrade—wood baseboards around the bottom to hold litter in. A couple screws per board, no fancy support, just something that stops the mess. I also talk through how I’m separating birds we’re keeping (to grow out and judge for breeder standards—back, tail, feet, eyes, comb, all of it) versus chicks we’ll likely sell in about 4–6 weeks.
