About This Video

Two days before a historic Oklahoma winter storm, I went into full prep mode because farm life doesn’t pause just because the forecast gets ugly. It was already spitting snow when I headed to the feed store (with Ruger as my sidekick, of course). I stocked up on our normal pallet of feed plus a hard “lick” protein tub and mineral blocks so the livestock has what they need when it drops to sub-zero. I also busted thin ice on water, made sure everybody was set, and started thinking through the real-world stuff that matters—where animals will bed down, what gates will be a headache, and what has to happen before the snow hits. We ran errands like Tractor Supply, Lowe’s, and yes… Walmart (mad house), grabbing buckets, dog food, black oil sunflower seeds for the chickens, and fuel for the generator. Jeremy installed a whole-home surge protector because our power likes to shut off and kick back on, and I don’t want that wrecking appliances. I also mixed up a “safe-for-the-farm” mouse bait (baking soda + Jiffy) to help with barn rodents without risking wildlife or livestock. Back at the ranch, we prepped bedding by pushing spent hay into the baby cows’ lean-to, treated diesel to prevent gelling, and worked through chicken winter care—water first, then feed, plus wind blocks and shelter checks. It’s slow, methodical work, but that’s how you keep animals comfortable and a working farm running when the weather turns serious.
