This is episode 1 of my new Network Attached Server build, and I’m starting where I always like to start: planning the hardware and the ZFS layout before I start stuffing parts into a chassis. I walk through what I’m currently planning to include in this TrueNAS box—storage connectivity, networking, cooling, and the case—and I explain how I’m thinking about data storage pools so the build has a clean upgrade path later. The goal here is to make the “why” behind the parts list really clear, not just show you a pile of components. I also spend time on something that saves me headaches every single time: pre-validating the NAS hardware on a test bench. I want to see the system POST, confirm the HBAs/controllers show up correctly, and generally prove the core platform works before I commit to cable management inside a 4U chassis. Then I wrap up with how I plan to install everything into the case, including drive bay strategy, power cabling considerations, airflow, and why I’m leaning on proven server-friendly parts for a TrueNAS/ZFS build.
