This day started out checking out some tourist overlooks near Moab, UT, but turned into an amazing off-road adventure with some of the best camping spots that I will never forget. About This Video

This day started with a pretty normal plan: check out a couple tourist overlooks and scout camping near Moab. I headed about 40 miles south toward the Needles Overlook Road area, with a loose list in my head—Whistle (Windmistle?) Campground, Hatch Point Campground, a few overlooks I can’t pronounce, and whatever random dirt road tried to tempt me. And yeah… the dirt won. I ended up chasing side trails, dropping into steep little 4x4 sections, and finding no-name overlooks that were flat-out ridiculous for how little traffic they get. A big takeaway from this run is that the “less famous” Moab zones can be the most rewarding—especially if you’re willing to earn the view. I hit corrugated roads that absolutely beat me up, found campgrounds that were actually pretty nice (even though I’m not really a campground dude), and then stumbled into a 4x4-only overlook trail that I’d put up against some of the big-name Moab trails any day. I wrapped it up at Needles Overlook with a killer walk out to the lone bench spot—because the guardrail viewpoint is cool, but the trail-less-traveled view is the one that sticks with you. Worth it. 100% worth it.
