I rolled out of Gooseneck State Park thinking I’d do a quick few miles of pavement… and then, like always, I saw a little dirt road and couldn’t resist. That turned into John’s Canyon Road—an absolute “road less traveled” win with massive cliffside views, a couple sketchy shelf-road sections, and way more payoff than you’d expect for how little people talk about it. I poked around a detour that leads to overlook camping and found everything from “it’ll work” dispersed spots to a straight-up epic campsite with a killer view of the San Juan winding through the canyons. That one earned my little “epic man status,” no question. Back on John’s Canyon Road, the canyon just keeps delivering—big burnt rock walls, desert trees that feel weirdly exciting out here, and a spring/waterfall area that’s probably way more dramatic after rain (when it’s not just a small trickle). I wrapped it up with a stop at some petroglyphs that are super easy to miss, with a short little hike to get closer. If you’ve got a capable, high-clearance vehicle and you’re anywhere near Gooseneck, this trail is a must.
