I finally rolled onto the infamous Valley of the Gods Road looking for that magical “remote office” spot to ride out the week—because Sunday was fading fast and Monday was coming whether I liked it or not. This road is popular (and yeah, I wasn’t the only one running from winter), so the first mission was simply finding a place to land. Even before I drove the whole route, it was obvious: this is a dispersed camper’s dream. The views are ridiculous in every direction, even if a lot of the sites are a little closer to the road than I’d prefer. After a night of steak and a sunrise that absolutely lit up the cliffs, I upgraded to a prime camp near Rooster Butte and set up my office with a view—heater blowing right on me because I’m a weenie when it’s cold. I also call out a big rule here: no ground fires. Bring a propane fire pit if you want flames, because fires aren’t allowed (and yes, you’ll still spot plenty of illegal fire pits out there). Over the week I dealt with wind, a bit more foot/OHV traffic than expected, and then spent some time doing “dirt road therapy,” marking my favorite campsites and sharing what the road is like: generally smooth, maintained, and totally doable with decent clearance when it’s dry.
