Smokey Mountain Road is an amazing 78 mile stretch of road that is at the top of my list for must do overland trails. If you add in the Alstrom Point detour you will be over 100 miles of dirt. It checked every box for me: remote, camping, views, unimproved road, raw fun! I can't recommend this trail enough if you are looking for an Overlanding adventure. My start point: Escalante, UT 37.75858, -111.61683 Turnoff for Alstrom Point: 37.13568, -111.48203 My End point: Big Water, UT 37.07683, -111.63364 About Overland Calling: Our goal is to share adventures, overland remote work practices, gear reviews, and lessons learned in the hope that it will inspire others or aid them along the way. About This Video

Smoky Mountain Road has been sitting at the top of my must-do list, and in this video I finally run it—an unimproved 78-mile stretch of dirt connecting Escalante to Big Water, Utah. I roll out after topping off gas and grabbing snacks in Escalante, fire up Trails Off-Road, and settle into what I love most about overlanding: being way out there, away from the highway, with zero services in between. The road starts out as decent hardpack, but you’ve got to stay sharp for washes, corrugation, and the kind of dips that’ll bite you if you’re carrying too much speed. Along the way I talk camping strategy (I’m always hunting wind protection), vehicle considerations (I’ve seen pitches up to 14–16°), and why airing down earlier would’ve made my life way nicer. I also blend in the reality of overland remote work—Starlink check-ins, east coast hours, and turning a ridiculous overlook into an “office with a view.” I wrap it up with a detour to Alstrom Point, and yeah… that one checked every box for me: remote, camping, views, unimproved road, raw fun. If you’re looking for a real overlanding adventure in Utah, I can’t recommend this trail enough.
