About This Video

I see this all the time on trail: hikers with trekking poles, but they’re not actually getting the benefits—and sometimes they’re setting themselves up for an injury. In this video I break down why poles are worth using in the first place (stability on mud/snow, faster uphill movement, taking some load off your legs and back, and especially saving your knees so you can keep hiking for decades). I also mention the extra little arm workout you get, plus the practical stuff like using poles for protection and even saving weight if you run a trekking-pole tent. Then I go through the big mistakes I keep spotting: using the straps the wrong way (thumb trap = bad time), planting poles too far in front or too wide, and having the wrong pole length for the terrain. I show exactly where to place your poles on flats and climbs (behind your foot so you can actually push forward), and how I handle downhills with two different techniques depending on how steep/slippery things get. I also cover cadence—using the pole opposite your active foot—and when to ditch rubber tips or baskets so you get real traction from the carbide tip on gravel, rocks, and forest trails.
