Well, it turns out that the answer is not so simple. You cannot assign a value for every gear and call it a day, because this value will always depend on your current gear (which you're trying to upgrade). So if you want to calculate which UL gear saves the most weight per dollar, you have to enter the weight values of your current setup in a spreadsheet file. If you do that, then yes, we can calculate which gear would save the most weight per dollar exactly. This is very useful for two things - to determine what type of gear to buy first (for example, a tent or a sleeping pad), and to determine which brand and model specifically has the best weight savings per dollar. This is super useful if you're trying to upgrade your gear on a budget. About This Video

Today we’re looking at spreadsheets… okay let’s go. In this video I tried to answer what sounds like a simple question: which ultralight upgrade saves the most weight per dollar? And the annoying (but useful) truth is you can’t slap one universal “value” on a tent or a pad and call it a day—because the best bang-for-buck depends on what you’re upgrading from. So I built a spreadsheet with data from 300+ pieces of UL gear across 11 categories, and you plug in the weight of your current setup as the baseline. Then it spits out grams saved per dollar, and the higher the number, the better. Once you use it category-by-category, you start seeing what to buy first. In my examples, backpacks and tents can be surprisingly efficient upgrades, while inflatable sleeping pads often give pretty low grams-per-dollar, so they’re usually a later purchase. After I explain how the spreadsheet works, I share three full setups with strong weight savings per USD: an affordable setup ($615 / 5.45 kg), a medium setup ($1,191 / 3.9 kg), and the “dream” expensive setup ($2,779 / 2.7 kg). And yeah—this is subjective: prices, sizes, shipping, and durability all matter, so sometimes a slightly heavier item is still the smarter buy.
