About This Video

I’m in Austria in the Eastern Alps, standing above the Grünloch (Günllock) sinkhole—aka a place that looks like the most perfect campsite ever: flat meadow, short grass, trees for wind cover. The problem is it can get deceptively, stupidly cold down there. There’s a measuring station in the basin and the lowest recorded temperature is -52.6°C, which is just wild when you realize Austria’s other record low is “only” -37°C at much higher elevation. So in this video I break down what’s actually going on, and why a spot that feels sheltered can be the worst place to sleep. The culprit is a cold air pool: once the sun sets, the ground cools the air above it, and that denser cold air flows downhill like water and collects in low spots. In a deep depression like the Grünloch, it can get trapped and barely mixes with warmer air above, creating huge temperature swings—sometimes 30°C from the bottom to just a little higher up. I demonstrate it with a simple hot/cold water density experiment, then I set two thermometers about 30–40 meters apart in elevation to measure it overnight. By morning I saw about a 10°C difference (and a big humidity jump in the basin), which is exactly why I tell people: don’t blindly camp at the valley bottom unless you’re truly prepared.
