About This Video

Wild camping in Europe is one of those topics where it’s either completely legal, “illegal but tolerated,” or straight-up banned and actually enforced. In this video I go country by country (and region by region where it matters) and give you a rough overview of how tent wild camping is treated across Europe—plus where you’re most likely to get fined. The big thing to understand is that the EU doesn’t have one rule for this, and even many countries don’t have one single policy either. A lot of the real rules are set by municipalities, regions, or protected areas, so if you’re going somewhere specific, you still need to double-check locally. If you want the easiest answer: Scandinavia is the best place to wild camp because of right-to-roam laws in Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Then I talk about the UK split (Scotland vs England/Wales/Northern Ireland), Ireland and Iceland, and the “bivouac” situation in places like Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. After that, I share 10 practical tips I’ve learned from wild camping across Scandinavia, the Baltics, Spain, France, and Italy—stuff like going small and neutral-colored with your tent, setting up late, avoiding fires, using red light, leaving no trace, and dealing with food storage (especially if you’re in bear country).
