A year later, I reconsidered about hosting my own website, and somebody bought the domain name and created a blog there. In this video, I deep-dive into the topic of forever chemicals found in hiking gear and in our everyday lives. Forever chemicals are a large group of chemicals, and they're sometimes also referred to as PFAS, PFCs, PFOS, PFOAs, or simply fluorocarbons. I've been wanting to learn more about this subject for a really long time. So I finally did, and I essentially summed up everything that you need to know about forever chemicals in outdoors gear in one, simple video. Also, I don't know which of my gear specifically contains PFAS, because I didn't test it myself. I relied only on tests by Greenpeace (and they've done several). Each time, they found PFAS in about 80-90% of the gear tested. So if I marked any item from my personal gear as containing PFAS in the video, in reality, they might be PFAS-free. And lastly, this video might contain factual mistakes. I tried to limit them, but I can make mistakes. If you want to learn more about PFAS, especially in outdoor gear, watch this podcast. About This Video

In this video I went way down the forever-chemicals rabbit hole—PFAS/PFCs/PFOS/PFOA, all the fun alphabet soup—and what I found is honestly worse than the usual “your rain jacket is toxic” headline. The wild part is that it’s probably not just your Gore‑Tex shell: based on Greenpeace testing, something like 80–90% of outdoor gear they tested had PFAS, including categories you wouldn’t expect. These fluorocarbon chemicals were basically “magic” for performance—water resistance, durability, oil/stain resistance, even fire resistance—and they helped make modern waterproof-breathable gear what it is. Then I get into the ugly side: PFAS are linked to serious health effects (including cancer), there’s no safe amount, they bioaccumulate, and they don’t break down for hundreds or thousands of years. Even if you’re not licking your jacket, PFAS can still get into the environment when gear is washed, degrades, or ends up in landfills—so the biggest impacts often hit factory workers and people living near factories, airports, landfills, or contaminated water sources. I also cover what “PFAS‑free” actually looks like right now, why brands used PFAS (cost, manufacturing ease, performance), and why the real tradeoff is usually oil/stain resistance—not basic water repellency. The good news: more brands have switched (or are switching), and new laws in places like California are pushing the whole industry toward PFAS‑free gear as early as 2025.
