Back in the day when everybody was relaxed, a “flat iron” appointment was way simpler. Today, you’re paying for the work it takes to straighten natural hair safely and beautifully.

And keep in mind, if you only come to the salon once a year and you’re not heat trained at all, it can be harder to get long-lasting results—but it’s still possible with the right technique and products.

A lot of the time, the cheaper services are using a lot of heat without enough heat protectant or without high-quality products that support the hair. You might get the basic of the basic—no real treatments, no moisture/protein balance, and minimal protection. That’s when people end up with dryness or heat damage, especially on natural hair.
