About This Video

Hey girl hey! In this video I’m taking my client from blonde to a rich cherry burgundy/red, and I’m walking y’all through why a true color correction is a whole different process than “just slap the color on.” Her before had banding and that blotchy, splotchy look from previous color sitting on bleached hair (she told me it was a dark ash brown). So my goal first was to get her roots and the darker areas as close to one canvas as possible—without re-lightening the super blonde parts and making the job harder. I start by lifting the dark bands first (low and slow, because color corrections are not a rushed process and I’m not trying to kill anybody’s hair). I’m focusing product where it’s darker, and I wait on the lighter areas so I don’t overprocess. Then we get into the step you cannot skip when you’re going from light to dark: filling the hair. Filling helps the new color deposit evenly, last longer, and keeps you from getting those green, muddy, yucky tones. After that, I apply her final reds—darker at the root and a slightly lighter red through the ends for that ombré burgundy vibe—plus face-framing and a layered cut (90s layers… I’m obsessed). Total time was about 4.5 hours and yes… we ate.
