Hello, my pearls. In this video I’m finally scratching that itch I’ve had for a long time—doing a perm rod set on my fine, chemical-free natural hair. I’m using jumbo orange perm rods (yes, I had way more than I needed because you never know when a band will pop) and a new-to-me styler: SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Hydrating Wrap & Set Mousse. I walk you through how I section, detangle, keep my hair damp, and smooth the ends so the curls come out sleek instead of puffy and frizzy. I also share what I’m noticing in real time about the mousse—how it applies, how it feels on my hands, and what it does for hold, shine, and softness. I sit under my hooded dryer for 1 hour and 35 minutes (I do not recommend air-drying perm rods… ever), then do my takedown and separation. The curls came out bouncy, shiny, and festive—perfect “holiday hair”—but I did get flurries/flakes, likely from using too much product. By day four the set still held up well and the flurries were gone, but because of the flaking, this mousse is not a repurchase for me right now.
