Flat twists are one of my go-to styles because they can be a protective style for length retention, a way to stretch your hair, and the perfect foundation for a bomb twist out (which is how I typically wear my hair). I start on clean, moisturized, detangled hair, and I show you the exact tools I use to make the process smoother—wide tooth comb, detangling brush, and a rat tail comb for those straight, polished parts. I also talk through wet vs. dry flat twisting. When I’m doing a flat twist out, I prefer a wet set so the twists set nicely and stay put—my twist outs usually last me about a week, and I rarely retwist. I demonstrate the beginner-friendly technique: split the starting section into two pieces (not three), twist once, then keep twisting while picking up hair from underneath—hands close to the scalp for a tight, smooth result. My biggest tip: slow down if your hands feel confused—flat twisting is about rhythm, not speed. Let your twists dry 100% before unraveling for defined, fluffy curls.
