About This Video

In this video I wanted to keep it short and hit some vinyl collecting tips for beginners, because I know there are always new folks jumping into the vinyl community. I’m not here pretending I’m some high-end audiophile with a six-figure system and a warehouse of first pressings—this is just my opinion from doing the hobby since 2003 and learning what actually works in the real world. The biggest gear tip I can give: please, for the love of God, don’t buy a Crosley. They’re cheaply made and will scratch the hell out of your records. Instead, spend a couple hundred bucks on a decent starter table—Fluance is a brand I’ve owned (RT85) and I thought it was fantastic, with different tiers and solid cartridges. From there, I talk about how collecting styles are all over the place and none of them are “wrong.” Some people chase 50 variants of the same album, and that’s cool—my approach changed over time as I learned more about sound quality, pressing plants, and mastering. I also stress protecting your records: grab outer sleeves and poly-lined inner sleeves, because a lot of new records come with those shitty paper sleeves that can scuff and leave dust everywhere. At the end of the day, the only opinion that matters is your own—use what I share as a starting point, do your research, and enjoy the journey.
