About This Video

In this video I go deep into one of my all-time favorite solo artists: Neil Young. I walk through my Neil Young collection and give you a “history” of his catalog as I see it—especially that late ’60s through late ’70s/early ’80s run that most fans and critics call his most prolific era. I also touch on the other eras: the experimental ’80s stuff (electronic, rockabilly, twangy country, blues), the late ’80s/early ’90s comeback stretch, and then the later, more hit-or-miss period where some albums get a little too preachy for my taste. Before I hit the solo records, I show a couple essentials from Buffalo Springfield and CSNY—great entry points if you want the bigger radio staples. From there, I run through key Neil albums in my collection (mostly original pressings) and tell you what’s essential, what’s optional, and why. I talk sound and availability too, including the Neil Young Original Release Series reissues—often cut from the original analog master tapes and mastered by Chris Bellman—plus the Archives live releases where Neil is upfront about sourcing and mastering. Along the way I highlight personal favorites like “Cinnamon Girl,” “Powderfinger,” and my #1 Neil Young album, “Tonight’s the Night,” because it’s just the rawest, most emotional Neil you’ll ever hear.
